8 Best Plumbing Answering Services in 2026 (AI and Live, With Prices)

Compare 8 plumbing answering services, AI and live, on prices checked Oct 26, 2026, emergency routing, calendar and Jobber booking, plus a

A plumbing answering service grabs the calls you can't, because you're under a sink or halfway into a crawlspace. The good ones can tell a burst pipe from a quote request. They put routine jobs on your calendar, text you what came in, and only ring your cell when water is actually pouring through somebody's ceiling.

Picture it. You're flat on your back under a kitchen sink, wrench in hand, and the phone in your pocket buzzes. Then it buzzes again. One of those is probably somebody asking what a water heater swap runs. The other might be a basement taking on water. From where you're lying, they sound exactly the same.

That's what this kind of service is for. We've rounded up eight we'd seriously look at in 2026. Some are AI receptionists, some put a live person on the line, and every price below was copied off the vendor's own pricing page.

First, the bias part. AptaBook is ours, and yes, it's listed first. We held it to the same format as the rest, "skip it if" line included. We pulled every price from the vendors' own sites on Oct 26, 2026. They change a lot in this space. Seeing a different number? Go with the vendor's page, and tell us so we can update ours.

If you only read one section

  • AptaBook: our AI agent. Calls, chat, WhatsApp and email in one place, emergencies sorted from routine work, flat plans, no overage.

  • Smith.ai: humans on the phone, billed per call. There's also a cheaper AI product sold separately.

  • PATLive: human-only answering by the minute, bilingual included.

  • Rosie: cheap AI, though calendar booking waits until the middle plan.

  • Goodcall: AI billed per unique customer, not per minute.

  • Dialzara: about the lowest-cost way to get something answering a quiet line.

  • Upfirst: AI billed per call, which is kind to short calls.

  • My AI Front Desk: AI receptionist plus chat, texting and a basic CRM in one bundle.

So what would 50 calls a month cost?

Comparing plan cards is maddening. One counts minutes, one counts calls, one counts customers. So we took a single, fairly ordinary month and priced it everywhere.

Here's the month: a shop with a truck or two, 50 calls that need answering, roughly 3 minutes apiece (150 minutes all in), monthly billing, nothing added on. These are our estimates off list prices. Nobody quoted us.

Yes, AI is far cheaper here. That's not the end of it, though. A real person is better at talking a frightened homeowner through shutting off the main while they stand in an inch of water. Software, on the other hand, will happily pick up five calls at once the morning after the first hard freeze, and no single receptionist can do that. One honest note on our row: 50 is right where Solo stops. We don't bill you extra past that. We just prompt you to move to Starter, which is $99. Grab last month's call log and run your own numbers.

How these eight made the cut

Mostly, they're the names trade owners keep bringing up when they compare options. We wanted both camps represented, AI and live. On Oct 26, 2026, we went through each pricing page and jotted down the billing unit, what you get, the trial terms, and whether a booked job actually shows up on a calendar.

We'll be straight about the limits. We didn't place test calls into every competitor, and we didn't buy accounts. If a feature lives on a higher tier, we've flagged it. If a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so instead of guessing.

1. AptaBook

This one's ours. AptaBook is an AI receptionist that covers your phone, website chat, WhatsApp and email with a single agent, trained on your site, your service list and your FAQs. For plumbers that means picking up in seconds and asking what's wrong and where. A live leak or a no-water call gets flagged and handed to whoever's on call. Drain cleaning, fixture installs and water heater quotes go straight into Google Calendar or Outlook. Our home services page walks through the setup.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Solo runs $49 a month and covers 50 conversations. Starter is $99 for 400, Professional $149 for 1,500, and Enterprise is priced per company. You won't see overage charges on any of them. The 15-day trial doesn't want a card. It's all laid out on our pricing page.

Where it helps a plumbing shop: - Jobber is a real, working integration, so booked jobs can land where your techs already look. Here's everything we connect to. - Keep your number. You forward it to us; nothing gets ported. - Setup is under 10 minutes. The agent handles 20+ languages. - The same rules cover overflow, your lunch break and after-hours calls.

Watch-outs: - No native ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro integration. If that's your system, it's Zapier or typing jobs in by hand. - It's software. Some of your older customers may just want a human voice, and that's fair.

Skip it if: every call has to reach a person, or your dispatch lives in ServiceTitan and Zapier is a non-starter.

Want to hear it field a burst-pipe call first? Book a quick demo.

2. Smith.ai

Smith.ai sells live receptionists and, separately, an AI receptionist. When a plumber says "Smith.ai," they nearly always mean the people. Live calls are billed by the call, not the minute, so a long-winded caller describing a remodel doesn't cost you extra.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Live Starter is $300 a month for 30 calls. After that it's $11.50 a call. Basic gets you 90 calls for $810. Want them to book the appointment too? Add $1.50 a call. On the AI side there's a free tier (25 calls, then $3 each) and Pro from $150 a month for 75 calls.

What it does well: - Predictable per-call cost, even when calls drag on. - If live pricing feels steep, the AI product is a cheap way to try them.

Watch-outs: - Booking and notifications are paid extras. Stack a couple and each call creeps past $12. - Thirty calls disappears fast in a cold snap.

Skip it if: you're watching every dollar and your call count jumps around with the weather.

3. PATLive

PATLive has been answering phones for businesses for a long time. Real people, working from a script you sign off on, taking messages and transferring calls.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Pay as you go is $49 a month, zero minutes included, $2.99 a minute. Step up to 100 minutes for $189 ($2.09 per extra minute) or 200 minutes for $349 ($1.99 after).

What it does well: - Humans only, which some customers flat out prefer. - Bilingual answering is part of the service.

Watch-outs: - Every minute is billed. Chatty callers get expensive.

Skip it if: most of what comes in is "can someone come Thursday?" An AI agent handles that fine for far less.

4. Rosie

Rosie is a budget AI receptionist built for small service businesses. The entry plan is cheap. The catch is what's on it.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Professional costs $49 a month for 250 minutes and texts callers a booking link. Scale, at $149 for 1,000 minutes, books straight onto your calendar and adds warm transfers. Growth is $299 for 2,000 minutes.

What it does well: - Plenty of minutes for the money on the entry plan.

Watch-outs: - Direct calendar booking and warm transfers both start at $149. For emergency calls, transfers matter.

Skip it if: you need live booking and emergency handoffs but want to stay close to $49.

5. Goodcall

Goodcall's twist is billing. It counts unique customers, not minutes or calls.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Starter is $79 a month and covers 100 unique customers, then 79¢ each. Growth is $129, Scale $299. There's no classic free trial; you get a free demo agent to play with.

What it does well: - Repeat callers don't count twice. Handy when one customer rings three times about the same leak.

Watch-outs: - Starter allows one team member and keeps 30 days of call history.

Skip it if: you want to run a proper trial on your real number before paying anything.

6. Dialzara

Dialzara has one of the cheapest entry plans we saw, with tiers that scale by minutes.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Business Lite is $29 a month for 60 minutes, with extra minutes at $0.48. Pro is $99 for 220 minutes. Plus is $199 for 500. Elite is $349 for 1,000. You get 7 days to try it.

What it does well: - Very low cost if your phone barely rings.

Watch-outs: - Lite leaves out warm transfers, calendar sync, bilingual answering and after-hours rules. For a plumber, that's most of what you'd want.

Skip it if: you expect emergency routing on the bottom tier.

7. Upfirst

Upfirst bills per call. Short calls are its sweet spot.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Starter is $24.95 a month for 30 calls ($1.50 each after). Premium: $59.95 for 90. Pro: $159.95 for 300. Scale: $299 for 600. Pay yearly and you save 20%. There's a free trial.

What it does well: - No penalty when a caller rambles.

Watch-outs: - Adding another agent costs $9.95 a month.

Skip it if: you regularly blow past your plan and would rather have one fixed bill.

8. My AI Front Desk

My AI Front Desk packages an AI receptionist together with web chat, two-way texting and a simple CRM.

Pricing (checked Oct 26, 2026): Business-in-a-Box is $99 a month, or $79 if billed yearly. That includes 200 voice minutes, 100 chatbot conversations and 400 texts. Partner and Enterprise plans are quote-only. Trial: 7 days.

What it does well: - One vendor for calls, chat and texts, if you don't have a CRM yet.

Watch-outs: - Extra minutes draw from a credit pool. Do the math if your calls run long.

Skip it if: you already live in Jobber or another field service app and just want the phone picked up.

What should it actually do with your calls?

Whichever service you try, throw your real calls at it. Plumbing calls tend to sort into four piles:

  1. Real emergencies. Burst pipe, sewage coming up, no water at all, a water heater dumping onto the floor. A person needs to hear about these now, you or the tech on call.

  2. Annoying, but it can wait a bit. A slow drain the day before Thanksgiving. A toilet that won't stop running. Low pressure. Book them soon; nobody needs a 2 AM wake-up.

  3. Routine work and quotes. Water heater replacements, repipe estimates, new fixtures. Book these. Don't transfer them.

  4. Everything else. Vendors, invoices, robocalls. A message, or the spam filter.

One truck versus ten

Running a one or two truck shop? You really need three things. Calls answered. Emergencies sent to your cell. Routine jobs dropped on your calendar, so you aren't calling back ten voicemails at 8 PM after a long day. A flat plan with a known cost is usually the least stressful. Our post on AI receptionists for plumbers goes through that setup step by step. Contractors in other trades face the same pressure, and an answering service for contractors covers that ground.

Running several trucks, or several locations? Now the questions get harder. Who's on call tonight, and for which part of town? Does a call for the north shop book into the north shop's calendar? Should your office pick up first and the service only catch overflow? That's where inbound call handling rules, separate calendars, and a CRM connection (HubSpot or Zoho, say) start paying for themselves. Ask every vendor exactly how they route by location. Get it in writing.

Five questions worth asking any vendor

  • Who decides what counts as an emergency, and can I edit that list myself?

  • What happens if my on-call tech doesn't answer?

  • Do booked jobs show up in my calendar or Jobber, or just in an email?

  • What would a 4 AM call during a freeze cost me on this plan?

  • Do I keep my number?

FAQ

How much does a plumbing answering service cost?

When we checked on Oct 26, 2026, the AI services here started anywhere from $24.95 to $99 a month. Live ones started at $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute, or $300 for 30 calls. For our 50-call month, estimates landed between $49 and $530. Our answering service cost guide digs into the pricing models.

Can AI really handle a plumbing emergency?

It can, provided it hands real emergencies to a person right away rather than just taking a message. On any trial, call in yourself pretending to have a burst pipe. See what it does.

Do I have to change my phone number?

Not with AptaBook. You forward the number you already have. Nothing is ported, and you can switch forwarding off whenever you like.

How long is setup?

Under 10 minutes for AptaBook. Point it at your website, add your services and on-call rules, then forward your calls.

Does AptaBook connect to ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro?

Not natively, no. We integrate with Google Calendar, Outlook, HubSpot, Zoho, Zapier, Jobber, Mindbody, Google Meet, Gmail and Teams. For anything else, people usually use Zapier.

What about Spanish-speaking customers?

AptaBook speaks 20+ languages, Spanish among them. Other vendors differ by plan, so check.

Live person or AI?

Steady volume and customers who expect a human? Live is fine. Calls that arrive in bursts, after hours, or across chat and text as well? AI usually covers more ground for less. For a wider comparison beyond the trades, see our roundup of the best AI answering services.
